Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children's Affairs
In June 2009 Cabinet granted approval for the establishment of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs as a single entity in one location following the recommendations of the Management and Functional Review which was concluded in 2007. Arrangements are ongoing for the five new Directorates to be established and recruitment processes put into place for recommended posts to be filled with personnel taking on their new roles and responsibilities.
The five Directorates are: the Children’s Affairs; Social Welfare; Policy Development and Strategic Planning; Gender Policy and Advocacy; the Human Resources/Administrative and Finance.
The key policies and programs aim to provide efficient and reliable services within an enabling, protective and peaceful environment where the rights of women, children, the aged, the disabled and the marginalized are promoted and protected; where gender mainstreaming and advancement of women is vigorously pursued; family care and provision of social support services are maintained; rehabilitation of delinquent juveniles pursued and mechanisms are put in place to protect women and children whose human and sexual rights are abused.
The new Ministry will adopt a more strategic approach for better coordination of programs and resources, monitor and report on emerging issues that contravene the interests/rights of children, disabled and women and provide timely and adequate information to stakeholders and the wider donor community on planned and ongoing activities.
